Five Tribes: Dropping meeples in the desert

Five Tribes: Dropping meeples in the desert

Hey folks! Let’s talk Five Tribes, a game I just received from Christmas. It’s a 2-4 player game that lasts about 60 mins. I swear though, it really should’ve been a 5-player game since it is called Five Tribes. But I digress. The tribes are actually the different colored meeples in play for the game.

The game is about controlling ย tiles on the board through biddingย for turn order, and then picking up and dropping off meeples. The person with the most victory points at the end wins the game.

I was so happy to get this game from my sister. Plus, it comes with a lot of meeples!

So it’s been a crazy few weeks with the holiday season and then me getting sick. But now I’m back to 100 percent and trying to make up for lost gaming time. I totally get cranky when I don’t game at least twice a week.

First off, I received Five Tribes for Christmas from my sister. Woohoo! Who doesn’t love a giant bag of meeples?!? ย I plan to write up an overview about it soon.ย I was lucky enough to travel to my hometown for the holidays, and, of course, I never travel without a board game or two in my luggage.

Happy 2015!

Happy 2015!

Hi, people of the Internet! Hope you guys had a wonderful holiday season. Sorry for the lack of posts here, but I got really sick near the tail end of my Christmas vacation, and have basically spentย the last week sleeping off that horrible flu/cold/cough virus.

I’ve only recently started to feel like myself again. Anyway,ย I promise to get back up online with some posts. In the meantime, how’s your 2015 going? Get any good games for Christmas?

Russian Railroads and holiday White Elephant

Russian Railroads and holiday White Elephant

Hello, peeps of the Internet! It’s been quite a hectic December with the holidays and major life changes, but it’s been a great week of board-gaming.

I was happy to play my new copy of Russian Railroads this week. I actually received the gameย a few weeks ago from my BGG Secret Santa.ย On the BGG website, you sign up to be assigned a Secret Santa target and send $50-ish gifts out into the world. The person who received me was super duper generous, as I had received three large games, as well as a donation in my name to Oxfam so some impoverished family would receive a pair of goats. The other two games I received were Android: Netrunner and Lords of Vegas. I’ll keep you posted when I finally bring them to a gaming night.

My uber-generous Secret Santa gave me so many gifts!

So this week,ย I played Russian Railroads three times this week. I do love the smell of freshly punched-outย cardboard …

Francis Drake: Great game and components

Francis Drake: Great game and components

I love the treasure chests, boats and gems in Francis Drake.
I love the treasure chests, plastic boats and gems in Francis Drake. And those barrel supplies in the back totally remind me of old-school root-beer candy.

I purchased Francis Drake about a month ago at BGG Con. I first played it back in May and have been thinking about it ever since. The game was out of my budget onย Amazon, but I got a good deal on it at the Eagle/Gryphon Games booth in Dallas.

The game is a great medium-heavy euro, but, in all honesty, it’s the components that totally sold it for me. It has plastic ships, wood tokens, cardboard treasure chests and glass beads.

Let’s take a look at all theย componentย goodness …

Getting into board gaming

Getting into board gaming

The one game that started it all!
The one game that started it all for me – Ticket to Ride!

A question I get asked frequently is, “How did you get into board gaming?”

It only tookย one game to get meย hooked into a world of serious board gaming. The gameย was called Ticket to Ride.

It was the first eurogame that I had ever encountered. I received it as a gift for my 30th birthday, and board gaming for me has never been the same since.

Mysterium weekend

Mysterium weekend

I took my brand-new copy of Tajemnicze Domostwo, also known as Mysterium, to gaming on Saturday afternoon, and much to my surprise, it got played three times in a row! According to Google translator, the Polish translates to “Mysterious Property.”

I had purchased the game at BGG Con after playing a game in the Portal Games booth. A worker had billed the game as a cross between Dixit and Clue. I was intrigued and sat down to play a game. After playing it and seeing the beautiful, mysterious artwork, I immediately purchased it. Good thing, too, as I had bought one of the last few copies at the convention!

The end of BGG Con

The end of BGG Con

The final 24 hours of BGG Con was basically a blur of gaming and sleep-deprivation, and then when I returned to reality, work got in the way of writing about my experience.

As a first-timer, I read through multiple forums on BGG about transportation, food, activities and what to expect. But in the end, I was totally blown away by my experience. Twenty. Four. Hour. Gaming. ย Woohoo!

I returned to work telling my co-workers that the convention is just like a cruise. There are events scheduled, but in reality, you can do as little or as much as you want to. And I fully tried to take advantage of everything. So much gaming, so little time! And then just like that, four days passed, and it was time to go home.

My second day at BGG Con

My second day at BGG Con

I finished my second day at BGG Con, which is actually the third day of the convention. I wasn’t able to get in on Wednesday because of work. I totally wish I got in a day earlier. Yesterday felt like a day to adjust from travelingย and then checkingย out what the convention was all about. Today, I was in full force and had actual plans on what I wanted to do.

Naturally, lots of board gaming happened today, some epic battles and some surprises. I met even more folks today, too. I also got a free game from a nice gentleman, and lots of swag.ย Everybody is so nice here. We are all kindred spirits, and see nothing wrong with staying up all night to board game. ย You make hard decisions such as should I go get food or join this new game that’s starting? You totally feel like you’re in Las Vegas. Non-stop gaming. And you can get beer from the bar, too.

I made it to BGG Con!

I made it to BGG Con!

I landed in Dallas today and jumped right into board gaming. The energy is amazing, and people are pretty friendly. There are so many games!

The convention area is the entire basement floor of the Hyatt Regency DFW. There are board-game vendors, large rooms for gaming, a library to check out thousandsย ofย games, and various events to sign up for.

A quick recap inย photos:
